December 14th is a date to mark, whether it be for those who seek to participate with an application of their work of art or for those who want to see the variety works displayed at the very fist Redwood Art Show and Contest at the Art Festival.

Mrs. Yates, an art teacher here at Redwood, discloses the details of the event to take place. Most of the other middle schools, such as Green Acres and Ridgeview, are also included in the event. There will be display sections to show the artwork of the RHS students and another section for the middle school applicants. A winter theme was given to the feeder school contenders.

The applications from Redwood students range from metalwork and clay pieces to drawings and paintings. There is free admission and the event lasts for three hours. For the submission deadline, Yates said, “It is supposed to be this Friday [the 30th]… but we take stuff the next week as well. Anyone who is interested in submitting that is not in an art class is welcome.”

Jared Hightower,’19, is assisting the organizers of the Art Festival. He says, “The Art Competition is based off of Art Fest, which is going to be our first annual ‘art carnival’ kind of thing. We are trying to gather a bunch of schools together so we can try to get more people involved in art. It’s pretty much to inspire people… [The art entered] doesn’t have to be 2D. We can have sculptures there. It can be anything. For the art contest we’re trying to encourage other schools and grades from 8th grade and below to get involved and submit their art pieces so we can judge them and see who’s a winner… It’s a really fun experience for those that really want to get involved in art.” Hightower is anticipating the event to be a lot of fun for anyone who wants to see the many works of art.

Mr. Harris, another Art teacher here at Redwood, conveyed considerable enthusiasm towards the Art Festival and the integration of the feeder schools’ participation. He stated, “…it’s going to be an interactive art festival… you’re gonna do face painting, finger painting… sculptures, mural painting… they’re gonna have fun photo pic sites, snacks, hot chocolate, sugar cookie decorating. Plus, on our 30 foot screen… we’re gonna have a lot of art pictures and stuff on there.”

A lot is expected of the Art Festival and the organizers are just as excited as the as the participants. If you are interested in attending, the event will be on Friday, December 14th, 5:00-8:00 PM. There is no entry fee.
