Redwood and its freshmen discuss their first weeks of high school. Every year, freshmen have different experiences transitioning to high school. All middle schools have different environments, cultures, campus sizes, and experiences.

Hannah Baer, ’30, who attended Green Acres Middle School, said, “I feel more independent; teachers give you a lot more freedom.” Baer is glad that she doesn’t have to deal with “being controlled a lot during lunch now.”

High schools are way bigger than middle schools; there are new people, new teachers, and many ways around the school.

Jaclyn Afonso, ’30, who came from a class of 21 eighth graders and 200 students from George McCann Memorial, said, “ When I first got here, it was definitely a culture shock; everything is different. Looking forward to this upcoming school year, making new friends, and making memorable memories.”

Entering high school seems scary for students who come from a small school, but once you enter those gates, everyone is welcoming and willing to help.

Tou Xiong, ’30, who goes by Aiden, who went to Ridgeview, said, ”[I’m] looking forward to meeting new friends and to preparing myself for the future!”
