The BSU club is starting off with trying to get people on their feet and trying to get future generations a better start.

Jalon Wilkerson ‘24, says, “I think this journey will be difficult because this is not a club that worries about how we affect today we think on how we can affect the next class coming up and more generations to come.”

BSU clubs strives to get students ready on upcoming classes and want to focus on leading students to success. BSU club puts effort into what they work in and what they believe in.

Ahriel Madden 26’ says, “This journey will have its ups and downs simply because we are the first BSU to do so many things and organize a lot of events for ourselves.”

Madden says the BSU club puts thought and consideration into their club plans. Madden also says that the BSU club is very hard working.

BSU has started up a petition to change Redwood’s Academic building’s name.

Madden says, “We want to honor Arthur Wysinger as he was the first ever black person to come to Redwood.”

Technically speaking, the school wasn’t named Redwood at the time, it was named Visalia Union High School. Visalia Union was renamed Redwood in 1954.

BSU club wants to honor the first black student to attend high school in Visalia and wants to honor black students’ history here.

Wilkerson also says, “We felt like that people like Arthur who are not talked about should have some recognition and people at Redwood should know some of its histories.”
