This week will be packed with so many exciting and fun activities, all leading up to cowhide, the highlight of fall for most Redwood students. ASB has been working around the clock to make this happen, and it all leads up to this moment. Kadence Hetherington ‘28, the ASB spirit coordinator, said that ASB started working on Cowhide about two weeks ago. It was difficult to balance, “because we still had to deal with [the] pink out game and [the] minions game…those are our priorities first since they come first.”
Cowhide is biggest and most anticipated event of the year, bringing the entire school together for a night no one wants to miss. Liliana Herrera ‘27, an ASB student, said that school spirit is the highlight of cowhide for her. Herrera said, “whether you’re into showing school spirit or not, everyone does show up for cowhide and loves to wear blue and that’s the event everyone loves here and that’s our longest tradition here.”
This exciting event that affects all of Visalia has been here for generations whether or not you attend Redwood, and everyone loves to go because this is the longest high school rivalry there is here. Hetherington said that with this Cowhide being the 71st, it’s been surreal seeing how long it’s been around for and, “being able to see it involve over the years and all the improvements we made just seeing of how every generation has like take their spin on it and everything they bring to it just it being a tradition over the years.”
Cowhide game day is pure chaos! Make sure to get there early if you want to snag a seat before kickoff. Fayrouza Castillo ‘29, an ASB student, said that Cowhide fills up fast and to, “go earlier to cowhide because I lined up till it started and I waited for a while.”
For generations, the fierce rivalry between Redwood and Mt.Whitney has taken center stage. Back to back waiting to see who takes the Cowhide this Friday, hoping Redwood dominates and keeps the streak alive. Herrera said that it’s exciting to have a competition. She said that, “everyone, whether you’re in it or not, likes competition so getting to have that rivalry with them is always really cool and making it more exciting for everyone.”
Experiencing Cowhide for the first time is unmatched. So pumped for the rally and the major rivalry game ahead! Hetherington said that if she could give any guidance to freshman or anyone experiencing their first Cowhide is, “to have fun…and focus on everything whether that be in the rally like all the videos and the legacy, take it all in since time goes by so fast and just have fun don’t over think anything don’t worry about anything just live in the moment and enjoy it.”
