As golf season is in progress, Redwood High School’s girls Varsity Golf team is stepping onto the course with one goal in mind. To compete, improve, and make the most out of their season.
For the Redwood girls Varsity team, each match brings a new opportunity to challenge themselves and improve. While of course scores matter, the teams accomplishments also come from supporting one another and working together.
Emma Prouty ’28 said, “I believe this year we have a lot more potential people joining the varsity team so we have a great chance at making it to area qualifiers as a team and we also have individual players that are really good as well so I think this year is going to be really good.”
With a stronger group of players this year, the team has their vision set higher as they work toward making it to area qualifiers this year.
When asked what does it mean to represent Redwood as a varsity athlete Prouty said, “You have a lot of more weight on your shoulders, you’re carrying the team as a person and also helping the team become better and it also is just a team effort in general for varsity teams.”
“You have to contribute no matter what, if you shoot bad, score good, you’re the one that’s always going to contribute” said Prouty.
While each player brings their own strengths to the course, being a part of varsity comes with a shared responsibility to uphold the team.
As the season continues, the team’s accomplishments are starting to reflect the effort they have put into each match.
Sofia Mesa ’28 said, “We obviously want to win league, that’s a really big accomplishment that we were able to do last year so we think we could be able to do it again this year.”
With last year’s team winning league, the team hopes to build on that success and make another strong run this season.
Sports bring more than a score, they bring teammates that teach you life lessons, Mesa said some of the most impactful words she’s received by a few of her teammates is to, “just be confident and just have fun especially in golf where it can be a little stressful, its like a mental game, but if you just want to have fun then I think that’s the best part.”
For the team, staying motivated and enjoying the game can help take some of the pressure off during matches.

Every team has goals and Emma Hernandez, ‘28, said, “We hope to keep shooting numbers low, and we hope to go to Valley and be able to skip area, and we can all go to Valley as a team.”
Teams having multiple goals is really important so they can have something to look forward to. The golf team would really like to go to Valley since it would be something major for them.
For Hernandez, the most memorable moment was a recent tournament the girls had. She said, “I wanna say the highlight of our season so far was winning the Bakersfield tournament.”
In the Bakersfield tournament Hernandez said, “Everybody played really good that day and we beat nine other schools out there.”
Beating nine other schools can be challenging but the golf team put in all their effort and beat the schools.
From long practices and training, Hernandez and her team are continuing to strive for the best in hopes to get to Valley Championships.
As a team Hernandez said, “We all get along great like a big family, so it’s really fun to be able to hang out with them and be able to compete individually but you’re still part of a team.”
For a team it is important that everyone gets along, they all hold involvement together to win. With the many practices they have, the girls are able to encourage each other no matter what.
Ways of encouragement is a vital component of sports, when everyone is against each other, the feeling of being supported fuels athletes, Elly Paschall ‘28, said, “We high five each other, we always say good shot normally after each person hits.”
Beyond the continuing season, the girls varsity golf team has built a strong bond that makes the season meaningful.
As they stay working hard for valley championships, their teamwork and support for one another remains a key to success.

I’ve wanted us to spotlight golf more, and this really highlights the team’s goals and aspirations. Good job, Jordyn and Mariangela.
