The average teenager’s attention spans have dropped dramatically in the time of endless scrolling, where videos last seconds and distractions never stop.

Teens attention spans are repetitively shrinking with average focus on a single digital screen falling roughly 47 seconds in 2025-2026, down from 2.5 minutes in 2004, following by social media, video games, and constant multitasking.

Studies show teens now juggle between apps every 44 seconds, with 68% of young users reporting that social media harms their abilities to focus, causing academic strain and increased anxiety.

A writer, journalist and author of multiple internationally bestselling books, Johann Hari says, “We are living in a culture where our attention is constantly being interrupted, and that is having a serious effect on our ability to think deeply and focus for long periods of time.”

This constant interruption is noticeable in teenagers, who are surrounded by notifications, and multiple screens a day.

Hari says, “When your attention is constantly broken, you lose the ability to get into a state of deep focus, which is where we do our best thinking and creativity.”

For many teens, focusing on one task like homework or reading has become harder as distractions are always attainable.

Similarly, a study from Pew Research Center shows that due to the entertainment with dopamine loops attention spans can fry the brain.

The article states, “The emergence of bite-sized videos such as Reels, and shorts can provide a large amount of information at once. In addition to this, this short form of entertainment causes an individual to get addicted to them.”

This indicates how repeated interruptions can alter attention habits, making huge uninterrupted thinking increasingly difficult for teenagers.

According to the American Psychological Association, Gloria Mark, a PhD psychologist says, “Attention spans have dropped from minutes to seconds, with people now switching tasks in under a minute.”

In classrooms, this can lead to students struggling to pay attention during classroom structural material or completing assignments without distractions.

However, an article called King Street Chronicle offers a solution to shrinking attention spans.

It says, “Healthy habits can help rebuild attention spans damaged by social media. These habits include exercising, finding entertainment outside and off of screens, setting time limits on electronic devices and ensuring restful sleep.”

This shows that social media can have influence to shorter attention spans, there are solutions to reduce its impact by creating better habits, teens can regain control over their focus and attention.

From social media use to challenges in the classroom, shrinking attention spans are becoming harder to ignore.

Researchers say the causes aren’t simple, but being more aware of habits and making small changes could help teens stay focused.
