The difference in a winter break between a high achieving and low achieving student at Redwood appears to be quite small, with everyone getting their share of relaxation. Though some people are busier over break than others.
Although it was rare to meet a student who did more than was strictly required for their classes, most students choosing to have a relaxing break, Nathan Perez, a 4.0 GPA student (‘23) says, “My break was relaxing, we went to Hawaii and didn’t do anything remotely academic.”
Across the spectrum, it was uncommon to see people who used their winter break as if it was part of the school year, as the 3.0 GPA student Matthew Murrell (‘23) said, “I didn’t do anything this break unless camping at the beach counts.”
Although there are exceptions. For example, this year’s TKMEA Honor Orchestra has students practice over break, and many sports have practices during the winter.
In general, winter break seems to be much more of a time for relaxation than summer, with only rare instances of intense academic work, most of it coming from a sport or extracurricular activity, student performance not being a huge factor in how busy someone is. Especially because summer contains summer school while winter break is really just a break for most.
