Victoria Nino ‘21, a full time athlete and honors student, started making chunky knit blankets as a hobby over quarantine.

These giant knit blankets are made from large pieces of yarn, and there are different knitting patterns people use. Nino uses “Bernat” blanket yarn and uses about 6 to 10 bundles for one blanket. She says her preferred pattern is the “classic loop pattern”, which she says is just like braiding.

One blanket project takes her about 6 hours if she really focuses, but it also depends on the pattern and size of yarn.

Nino has been knitting blankets since last fall, and has made quite a few. She says, “I’ve had tons of practice, so I’m pretty sure I’m advanced, but I’m still learning more along the way.”

She first got the idea of big knitted blankets because she wanted to make a nice gift for her friend for Christmas. She thought a homemade blanket would be an awesome present idea. She says, “Tik Tok and Pinterest inspired me, it took a lot of research for me to understand it.”

Making these blankets is not just a hobby for fun, but Nino says that she loves, “…giving gifts to family, friends, and going beyond the expected when doing so.”

Nino enjoys creating these blankets because it’s calming and fun. She explains, “It’s very therapeutic. With being a full time student athlete, and taking honors courses, creating these blankets helps me relax.”

She encourages people to try out new crafts. and to find an outlet for creativity or relaxation, “I definitely recommend people to try making chunky knit blankets, or come up with any sort of hobby of their interest!”
