Students weigh in on which app they prefer and why—TikTok or Instagram?

VISALIA, CA- Social media is a big part of life for many Redwood students, but when it comes to choosing between TikTok and Instagram, opinions are divided. While both platforms are hugely popular, students seem to have strong preferences for one over the other. So, which one do Redwood Rangers like more? TikTok’s viral videos, or Instagram’s mix of photos, stories, and Reels? I asked around to find out.
For Odalys Gonzalez, ’26, Instagram is the winner. “Instagram is basically like TikTok, but better,” she said. “You can watch TikTok videos on Instagram Reels, and you can also see what your friends are doing, which makes it feel more connected.”
Gonzalez likes that Instagram brings together different types of content, whether it’s photos, stories, or Reels, all in one place. She finds it easier to keep up with friends and family while enjoying viral videos at the same time.
Stephanie Martinez, ’25, also prefers Instagram over TikTok. “Between Instagram and TikTok, I would choose Instagram,” she said. “I get to share my thoughts, experiences, and interests. It’s a great way to stay connected with my family and friends, and I can see what’s happening in their lives. Plus, I like Instagram Reels because it’s similar to TikTok.” For Martinez, Instagram feels more personal. She enjoys the chance to connect with others, share moments, and discover new content—all within one app.
Martinez also spends about one to two hours a day on Instagram, scrolling through her feed, watching Reels, and keeping up with what’s going on in her social circle. Instagram’s ability to combine short videos, photos, and stories seems to make it the better choice for both entertainment and staying connected with others.
While TikTok’s short, catchy videos are a big draw for some students, it’s clear that Instagram’s mix of different features makes it more popular for some Redwood Rangers. Instagram offers a place to share photos, create stories, and post videos, all while staying in touch with friends and family.
Although TikTok remains a fun app to explore new trends and laugh at viral videos, Instagram’s variety seems to be the reason why it’s the go-to app for so many students. It allows them to express themselves in more ways and stay connected in a deeper way with those they care about.
In the end, it looks like Instagram is still the favorite among Redwood Rangers—at least for now. While TikTok’s popularity shows no signs of slowing down, Instagram’s mix of features makes it the platform of choice for students looking for more than just videos. Whether it’s for catching up with friends, watching fun content, or sharing personal moments, Instagram continues to lead the way for Redwood students.

As a photographer, I really appreciate Instagram. I sorta miss the days when Instagram was just images, though.
