Welcome to a land beyond the rainbow and full of adventure, presented to you by Redwood’s Musical Theater. This year’s Spring Production transports you to the prairie of Kansas as a tornado rips Dorthy and her little dog Toto to a far away land in  The Wizard of Oz.

Straight from the beginning, the musical world of Oz is filled with vibrant life. The cast is enthusiastic and very dedicated to each and every one of their parts. Every cast member evolves into the person they are supposed to play.

Throughout the play there are many creative and fun songs. The dancing to go along with the songs are just as incredible. Each character is unique in their own way, and they all have their own special twist to make the storyline more extravagant.

The musical had very outstanding performances done by Tessa Hemphill ‘22 as Dorothy, Kylen Grey ’22 as the lion, Jersey Hays ’21 as the Scarecrow, and Solomon Stahl ’20 as Tinman.

One of the best parts about the play were the outstanding visual effects. In some scenes there was flying! The show really came to life with actually flying monkeys and bubbles pouring out of the sky. Beware- the front row you will get bubble blasted!

Technology played a part for certain backgrounds. You really felt like you stepped into the world of Oz. The special effects were cool to see and very well done.

Another excitement was how well the set was with props. The props are what really brought the show to life, it set the scene as they were so colorful and realistic. In addition, to the props the costumes and makeup were realistic and cool to see. All costumes were based on the original movie.

Redwood’s musical put a 2020 modern day spin on the musical with a scene dedicated to the crazy and jazzed world of Oz with a song and dance called the “jitterbug.” Fans of Beetlejuice are in for a treat with that song.

Mrs. Galvan, Redwood High School’s drama teacher and director never fails to amaze an audience with her dazzling ideas and perfect casting.

All in all, anyone with a heart up for adventure and magic should see Redwood’s musical take on “The Wizard of Oz.” Just remember there is no place like home!
