The Meg is a 2018 Thriller/Fantasy blockbuster film by Warner Bros., Di Bonaventura Pictures and Flagship Entertainment, starring Jason Statham, Ruby Rose, Rainn Wilson and popular Chinese actress Li Bingbing.

The movie is about a group of researchers, funded by Rainn Wilson’s billionaire character Jack Morris, to search underneath the Mariana Trench where there’s believed to be another world of prehistoric creatures. After a mission goes awry, they call in Jason Statham’s character, Jonas Taylor, to do a rescue operation. He successfully gets most of the people out, but an ancient 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon follows them when they exited the underneath. Jonas Taylor and the group must now find ways to stop the Megalodon and save thousands of people swimming or in the ocean.

The film grossed around 2.13 million dollars in the box office; the film then was given a 47% on the infamous review website Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie was based off a novel called “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror”, but the focus is solely on the film. It is a straightforward shark movie with a handsome action star at the front, generic storyline, interesting visuals and bearable dialogue. Jason Statham plays a seemingly-generic hero while Li Bingbing plays the obvious love interest. With Rainn Wilson attached to the project, it brings a comedic tone to the film’s realistic and kind of gloom attitude.

In my opinion, the movie was enjoyable at times, but can really drag on. Rainn Wilson is always entertaining, but in this movie, it seemed like he was toned down a bit. Jason Statham has, basically, played the same character for almost every movie he has been in. It seems that the overall purpose of this movie was to simply entertain and I respect that from a film with a giant shark and Jason Statham. All in all, the film is a generic popcorn movie with pretty dull characters, okay dialogue, and actually good CGI at times.
