Under the bright stage lights of the auditorium, Connor West, ’27, is taking the stage as he plays Vlad Popov in Redwood’s production “Anastasia.”
West has been involved in musical theater since 6th grade. West says, “I started with TCOE theater in “Moana Jr.” when I was in junior high and then got the role of Warner in “Legally Blonde Jr”. at Ridgeview. Before that I had always been around musical theater because both of my sisters were in musicals as well.”
Over the years, West has continued to develop his skills through various musical theater productions.
When asked, what’s been the most challenging part of playing Vlad, West says, “The most challenging part playing Vlad is having to balance something that still sounds like an older gentleman too.”
“Vlad is such a fun role because of his sarcasm and energy despite the fact he is old.” West says.
This role highlights West’s ability to balance humor and performance on stage.
Talking about his past roles, West said his favorite has been Sebastian from the production “Little Mermaid.”
He says, “My favorite role I have played in a musical so far has been Sebastian because I got a chance to interact with the audience and have fun on stage, and the feedback from the audience.”

“Especially the kids that came to watch it, one of the things I remember most about Little Mermaid was the student show. Afterwards they wrote me letters and I still have all of them.”
That enthusiasm is something audiences consistently see in his performances.
Mrs. Stacy Galvan, the drama teacher and school play director mentions that West is a fun loving person and has a great personality. She says, “He is so great to work with, he takes his craft seriously and works hard to create believable characters.”
Mrs. Galvan also says, “I’ve known Connor since he was very young, having directed his older sisters before he was even in middle school. Connor earned his role by having an amazing audition, every actor plays a part in making the show successful. Connor’s willingness to work with others and being open to direction makes him a great actor to work with.”
West’s dedication and positive attitude continue to make him a reliable member of the cast. His willingness to collaborate, take direction, and maintain a strong work ethic contributing to the overall production.
According to West’s mother, Catherine West, his involvement in theater has had a positive impact on him. She said, “When Connor performs he is in his element. He is confident, focused, and happy. He puts his all into each and every performance whether it be musical theater or a drama production.”
“He has always been very creative, writing and telling stories, developing characters, very tuned in to all the details that entails. Now he gets the chance to bring characters to life on stage.” Mrs. West says.

His early creativity has taken a new form through theater.
When asked how do you feel when you see your son perform on stage, Mrs. West says, “I am always so proud of him when he performs on stage and it makes my heart so happy. There isn’t much that is better as a parent seeing your child no matter how old they are doing something they love and something they excel at.”
She says, “I know he says that the audience reaction is one of his favorite parts and I do think seeing how others react to his performance is definitely a favorite part of ours too. I mean, we are a tad bit biased but seeing the reaction from others who are proud of him too, now that is special.”
Audience response is one aspect of performing that West and his family value.
Reflecting on his experience, West offered advice to underclassmen interested in theater.
He says, “Just do it! You will have more connections with people, like I have friends because of theater that I may have never talked to before. It is more than just going on stage in front of a bunch of people.”
“The experience is even more fun because you get to go have fun on stage with the people you have built those connections with.” He says.
