The new sports statistics class is a new way to look at math. Mr. Luis has created a way to add sports into your everyday learning. The sports statistics class focuses on sports while teaching statistics.

Sports statistics is an alternative math class for upperclassmen attending Redwood. Being able to work on projects and having a comfortable classroom environment is all a part of this college prep class. Instead of taking Pre-Calculus, many students chose to take the sports statistics class.

The kids in this class have learned a great deal of information about statistics topics and more about calculating scores/averages while watching sports.

Mr. Luis is the teacher of the sports statistics class. Being a person interested in sports, he feels that, “when sports excites you and you’re interested in learning about sports then this is a good class for you.”

Mr. Luis believes that having a comfortable classroom allows the students to work better together. He also wants to make learning math more interesting. As the first time having a class like this, it is so far a success.

According to students in the class, they are more comfortable in this environment, because everyone around them has at least one thing in common, which is liking sports. In this class, students attend sports games all throughout the year at Redwood, and they take stats.

Students that attend this class really prefer it, because if they are struggling with math and this is a little bit more enjoyable for them. Hannah Kearnan, ’21, says, “Class is a lot of work, but it is really fun.” Students in this class are looking forward to future projects involving statistics.
