Mitchell Dean ‘24 is a small business owner who sells homemade ice cream all while being a student at Redwood High School. In August of 2023, Dean created his small business ‘Dean Creamery’. Oreos and strawberries are available now to buy.

Passion and people’s interests are the main key to think about when starting a business.

“I wanted to start selling what I love doing for fun…everyone loves ice cream so it’s pretty easy to get people to buy.”

Managing time with a business as a teenager plays a very important role. For some students, it can be challenging but Dean handles it differently.

Dean says, “My business has taught me a lot about time management. When I get home the first thing I’ll do is start making ice cream.”

As a business owner, Dean has many products that catch the eye of customers. A few Redwood Rangers, Elijah Backlund ‘24 and David Ross ‘25 shared their thoughts about doing business with ‘Dean Creamery’.

Everyone has a different reason as to why they support and buy from a small business. But the one thing for sure is that they are there for the product.

Backlund says, “I bought from this business because I’ve known Mitchell for a while…I got to try one of his very first batches which was really good”.

Supporting a small business is a way to give back to the community and most importantly the owner.

Ross says, “I feel good supporting a small business because I have one of my own and I know how much time and effort it takes to go into a business.”
