Club day was Wednesday, September 3rd at Redwood High School. Each and every club was out on the quad in an attempt to gain new members.
Science Olympiad was one of the many. Mr. Arruda, the club Advisor, was one of the friendly faces greeting everyone interested in joining.

“I want the incoming freshman and anyone new to Redwood to think of Science Olympiad as a competitive team. We compete in a lot of different competitions…ranging from chemistry to biology to robotics, physics, all different facets of it, math.” Arruda said.
According to Science Olympiad’s official history, the program began in 1982 when Michigan educator Dr. Gerard J. Putz invited Delaware science supervisor John C. “Jack” Cairns to share the Olympiad model, and what started as two tournaments in Michigan has since grown into a national competition involving nearly 8,000 secondary school teams and 10,000 elementary schools across all 50 states.
President Yong Lee ‘26 and Vice President Junwoo Kim, ‘26, gave some insight on changes they plan to make this year.
Kim says “We’re trying to make the selection process more rigorous, and make the team more supportive, so officers and members could communicate to each other.”
Science Olympiad plans to meet Tuesdays at lunch this year, in Mr. Arruda’s room, 93.
Last year Redwood’s Science Olympiad placed best in Tulare County and they’re reaching for it again this year.
When asked of their goals Arruda says, “First place at regionals for sure…when we do go [to state] I would definitely like to have more people place again.”
