Following Redwood’s first Icebreaker dance and rally since 2019, ASB president Savannah Torres ’23 reflects on the planning and outcome of both events, along with her thoughts on the upcoming Homecoming week.

On August 12th, Redwood’s ASB put on an Icebreaker rally along with a dance, events intended to ring in the school year. Last year, the first dance, Winter Formal, did not take place until February.

Savannah Torres ’23, the ASB president, says the rally was “the best rally we’ve run in a long time” and both events “went way better than expected.”

She sites ASB’s “good communication and planning” as reasons for the Icebreaker’s success. She adds “we’ve been planning since the end of last year. So, we had all of our class posters for the rally done by the time Summer started.”

The planning process itself involved “a lot of team building” over the Summer, which Torres believes helped ASB members be “a lot less snappy at each other in the heat [while] setting up for Icebreaker.”

With the rally, Torres says “I do wish we had more crowd involvement, but it’s the first day back.” She adds she was “really excited to make Icebreaker super memorable.”

Torres says that ASB’s next focus is Homecoming, “Homecoming is 2 weeks away… [and] It’s going to be very busy.”

Torres thinks that “Homecoming is going to turn out really good” and she encourages students to “get involved with everything, especially the dress-up days” because “they’re the most fun.”
