Based on the Disney animated film with the same title, ‘The Little Mermaid’, follows Ariel, played by Mara Sampietro, ‘25, who dreams about living on land instead of the sea. She falls in love with a human prince named Eric, played by Nathan Delgado, ‘26, and seeks to do anything to be with him. Even if it meant that she had to make a deal with the wicked sea witch Ursula, played by Katy Robles, ‘25. Giving up her voice for legs, she attempts to win Eric’s heart.
While it closely follows the plot of the film, the musical has its own original songs. These songs make watching the show feel like a new experience even to the biggest fans of the Disney production.
The musical starts with a quick introduction from Sebastian, played by Connor West, ‘27, and Starry the Starfish, played by Owen, ’27, warning the audience about the presence of sharks. This allows the audience to be able to participate in the show, making it feel more immersive.
We are introduced to Ariel, whose curiosity about life outside of the water is instantly well-portrayed by Sampietro.
Her facial expressions throughout the show, especially when she “loses” her voice, are filled with wonder and curiosity about this new world. Sampietro’s faces make it clear what the character is thinking or feeling without saying a single word.
In ‘Part of Your World’, Sampietro’s phenomenal vocals and the band playing only a few feet away make the moment feel magical.
On a ship, we meet Prince Eric along with his crew singing an original song, ‘Fathoms Below’, with amazing choreography to go along with it. The prince speaks of a story of the ocean and how a mermaid waits for you, amazing foreshadowing, all while Ariel listens.
Along with the music, this production has colorful costumes that perfectly match the characters. With the mer-sisters in flowy colorful skirts and matching seashell tops, Sebastian in the head-to-toe red suit with a little flare, Flounder’s yellow suit with sparkly blue stripes and let’s not forget Ursula with the amazing headpiece and the biggest poofy purple and black dress.
The costume that especially stood out was Ursula’s costume. The bright glowing colors under the blacklight are very eye-catching and simply enhance Robles’ performance. Her amazing introduction on her throne, showing off her various tentacles was very rewarding as soon as she started singing.
‘Daddy’s Little Angel’ was such a great example of how amazing Robles’ vocal performance is, singing with so much power that it leaves an eariness throughout the remainder of the musical.
Her eels, Jetsam (Alyssa Espinoza, ‘26) and Flotsam (Lola Sulivan, ‘28) with their LED shoes are also cool to see alongside her.
As the plot progresses we see Ariel trying to show Eric that she is the girl he is in love with. With every scene, the chemistry between them grows, along with a beautiful scene of them together where Sebastian then sings, ‘Kiss the Girl’, with amazing props, choreography, and background characters.
Along with some of the songs you get light changes not just on stage but in the audience too. Makes it very captivating and feels like you’re a part of the show as well.
You can also find that there are ASL/HOH interpreters (ask ushers for special seating) to the side for whoever may need them, making the show very inclusive to all.
This musical has made the must-watch list and the rewatch list, too. It’s too magical to see the breathtaking and jaw-dropping performances portrayed so flawlessly by Ariel and her undersea friends.
