On March 19th, the Visalia Times Delta released the All- WYL Girls Soccer team and honors. Redwood is known for their domination in league and Coach Vieira as well as other coaches came together to vote on the awards and honorable mentions.

Jill Nelsen, ’19, was named the all league Co-MVP along with Hanford’s Sheyenne Hodge. Nelsen helped lead the team to yet another league championship as well as helping the team “outscored other league opponents 40-10” as stated in the Times Delta.

Nelsen now joins the list of Redwood WYL MVP honors such as Alexis Contreras, Brooke Crisp, Maddy Messier, and Kindal Mendes.

Nelsen said on behalf of this honor, “I’m so blessed…this opportunity to play at Varsity level for all four years has allowed all coaches to see how I play…I just appreciate it so much how all the WYL coaches recognized my hard work and dedication to the game, especially at Redwood.” Nelsen found out she received the honor from a picture on Twitter and said she was shocked to realize it was her, “I was ecstatic and thankful and shocked all at one time, I even shed some tears.”

“Jill is very deserving, a really hard worker, very passionate about soccer, the teammates, the program, she made everyone else better…”

Coach Vieira

Evan House, ’20, was also named as WYL’s Offensive Player of the year. Kelsey Konishi, ’21, and Payton Basso, ’20, along with House and Nelsen were honored as parts of the WYL First Team and were each rewarded with the titles and small plaques/ medals.

Although the players were highlighted for these honors, Coach Vieira’s accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. He’s helped lead the team to 8 WYL Championships in a row during his coaching span and 2 years ago, led the team to an outright Central Section DII Valley title.

“It makes my job a lot easier to have such great players to coach but it also towards the end of the year when they receive their individual recognition, it makes me proud to see all the hard work they’ve put into making the team better and push themselves to achieve individual success,” says Vieira.
