The Redwood Varsity girls’ golf team is currently eight days away from their first league tournament of the year. The team has had two scrimmages to help them get ready for the league season. These tournaments have been very helpful for this group of girls, they have given the group a chance to get used to playing in a competitive atmosphere and notice aspects of their games that need to be improved.

This is an incredibly motivated group that has got strong goals that they definitely want to live up to.

Varsity golfer, Lillie Wasem, ‘23 says that “I was super nervous during my first scrimmage tournament since it was the first time I’d played in a while.”

Wasem goes on to say that she felt it was very good to be in an environment that mimicked an actual tournament. She also says that she’s thankful for the scrimmage tournaments because they gave her a chance to see what she needs to work on.

She continues to say she feels that she really just needs to have “more consistency with [her] approach shots and my short game.” Overall, she is very much ready for the league season to begin.

Nerves definitely seem to be on the top of a lot of athletes’ minds this year. It certainly makes sense, after not playing for so long it must be incredibly scary for athletes to jump right back into their sports.

Another Varsity golfer, Presley Acosta, ‘22 believes that she played a bit better in the second scrimmage match compared to the first one. She says, “I improved, and eliminated some simple mistakes.”

Acosta goes on to say that she felt she got more comfortable as the match progressed. As far as goals go, Acosta believes that it is very important that she improves her mental game this season.

She adds, “I want to be more positive, if I hit a poor shot I want to walk away and stay focused.” This really does highlight just how important your mental state is in the sport of golf. Golfers really do need to be at the top of their mental games if they want to have success.

Varsity captain, Lily Stetson, ‘21 is excited and ready for her final year as a member of Redwood’s golf team. Stetson says her first scrimmage was not her best, however she felt like the second scrimmage was way better.

Throughout Stetson’s career on the team, she has been an incredible player and will no doubt be remembered as one of the best players in the history of Redwood’s girls’ golf program. However, Stetson is not focused on legacy at all, she just wants herself and her team to have the most success possible.

Stetson says, “my goal this year is that we win every tournament, I also want to place top five in WYL.” According to Stetson, she placed sixth last year and really would like to break into the top five this year.

This team undoubtedly has a ton of talented and confident girls. This group definitely has the potential to reach great heights. It’s going to be fascinating to see their journey unfold.
