Redwood football dominated El Diamante and secures a 42-14 win
by: Tyler Stark
The Redwood Rangers secured a massive win last Friday night at Groppetti Stadium as they beat the El Diamante Miners 42-14.
Head coach Kevin Scharton feels that the key to this game was using the run to set up the passing game. Scharton says, “Early in the game we threw the ball combined with the run. Once we settled in we established a running game which opened up the play-action passing game.” Scharton feels that going forward his guys just need to keep playing hard.
In past games, the Rangers’ path to victory has been having breakout games from one of their key players. However, receiver Ashton Ibarra ‘22 feels that the key to beating El Diamante was getting everyone involved. Ibarra says, “It was great that all the receivers were catching passes, and being able to get the ball into Karson Everett’s hands, and him running the ball very well.” Everyone was playing lights out for the Rangers. This was as close to a perfect game as you see in football.
Being that El Diamante is an inner-city rival for the Rangers, this game held great importance. Ty Potts, ‘22 said it felt great to show the differences in the skill of the two teams. “It felt great to show them who the better school really is.”
There was a lot of animosity between the two teams last week. It was very clear that this motivated the Rangers and gave them a lot of energy which they played with all night.
Next week the Rangers will take on their rivals, Mount Whitney, in their annual Cowhide game, and the Miners will take on their rivals, Golden West, in the annual Battle for the Saddle.
At press time, El Diamante did not respond to an interview request.
