Redwood’s drama students and teachers are more than excited to be back on campus after such a difficult online year. Drama student, Carly Jenson 24′, says “It feels amazing to be back on campus doing drama because everything is so interactive in that class and it was hard to have that over zoom.” Currently, students like Carly are practicing role-playing to help students feel comfortable with each other and more importantly on stage.
Drama online was not only difficult for students, but teachers as well. Drama teacher Mrs. Galvan says “It’s great seeing other students face to face and being able to do activities with my advanced drama class altogether. It’s great having Drama Club back to being active as well.” Since drama requires so much personal interaction it’s no wonder why both students and teachers are happy to be back doing what they both love.
Another drama student named Izek Nelson 24′ who is enthusiastic to be back on campus says “It honestly feels so great. During Covid, I tried being involved with theatre as much as I could. Doing most of Shrek on Zoom was a challenge, but being back on campus and being able to act and do the things we wouldn’t be able to do on Zoom has been so amazing.” Students finally get to perfect their craft by being back and practicing face to face, along with continuing to do what they love.
So many students had such a hard time last year that they are flourishing this year, especially in drama class. Many students have been acting since they were so small and continuing in high school was something that they knew they would love to continue despite the year they had last year. Ashlyn West 23’\ says “I’ve done drama since my freshman year, and I was prompted to take the class because acting has been my passion for a long time. I have been doing musicals and plays since first grade, so I knew that once I got to high school I’d want to take the class.”
No wonder how drama has continued to be so popular among high school students, so many missed the face-to-face contact along with performing for audiences. I can’t wait to see what drama students and staff do next!
