One of the many clubs that students can participate in at Redwood is FBLA. Members of FBLA are given the opportunity to explore the business field.
FBLA President, Nahir Karami, explains, “FBLA is where people can come together, have a good time, compete in events relating to different types of business, and win awards due to our performances and competitions.”
There are many different competitions with varying subjects of interest that students can compete in. Luzciel Ponce ‘24 states, “I entered a speaking event and an objective test to further my skills in public speaking.”
As with any important event, preparation is key. The preparation leading up to a competition ensures that each participant feels confident to compete.
Sarah Plummer ‘22 explains that “this year we handed out study materials the week before winter break. Closer to the competitions, we hold study sessions for the members where they can come and ask questions or just have a quiet place to prepare.
Due to the pandemic, this competition was the first in person event for many of the FBLA members’. However, these students are eager to compete.
Plummer continues, “last year was my first year competing, but it was on Zoom, so I’m not sure if I got a real idea of competition nerves. But, during the competition itself, there’s very limited time so stress isn’t typically something I focus on.”
She ends by saying, “my favorite thing about FBLA is making new friends. There are so many different people involved and throughout the year you spend a lot of time with a lot of people that you may not have otherwise.” Plummer compares these friendships to being like a family to her.
Freshman Lucas Lima ‘25 says that he has never participated in a FBLA competition, “but I imagine that the environment of competition is focused and competitive. I’m looking forward to seeing how it is.”
