Going into these games, there wasn’t much optimism, because they were 0-6 and, if they didn’t win, it would be quite the indicator of a long season ahead. But, the Rangers did get the win indeed. This was accomplished by a lot of different things, but the key point is that the Rangers picked up their first win of the season in a 15-3 fashion against the Sunnyside Wildcats on friday.
First of all, Ethan Garcia,’21 and Chase Banks,’21 played outstanding, only allowing one hit to #16 of Sunnyside. Ethan Garcia picked up 6 strikeouts on one hit, and three runs. Chase Banks followed him with a 2 strikeout, no-hit night.
It appeared as though it was going to be another long night, as Redwood gave up a three run first. They followed that with only one run. Thankfully, Redwood would allow no more runs after that.
Some key contributors of the game were Ryan Rios, ’20, Chase Banks, ’21, and Daryl Tillman, ’23.
Rios accrued 4 RBI, 2 runs, and a grandslam, which was his only hit of the night.
“[Thanks to the win] We can just go back to being ourselves, and playing baseball the way we know how to.” – First Baseman Ryan Rios
Banks dominated defensively, as well as offensively, as his pitching numbers were: 0 runs on 0 hits and 2 strikeouts in 3 innings pitched. His offensive numbers were 2 hits in 4 at-bats, 2 RBI, and 2 runs. It was also Banks’ birthday, so it was certainly quite a night to celebrate.
Tillman also put on a show, as he put up a total of 2 hits, one of which was a triple, 3 RBI, and 1 run.
Overall, the Rangers showed no remorse against the Wildcats, and were dominating almost at all times throughout.
“We just need to keep getting better. Everyday, every game, we need to take something from that game, and apply it to the next game.” -Baseball Coach Dan Hydash
The baseball team then defeated Paso Robles the following week defeating them 15-8. Lee Trevino dominated that game going 3-4 with a pair of RBI’s to go along with it.
Lee Trevino, ’21, says, “We still expect to win WYL.” Lee explains some of the struggles his team has faced due to a lack of experience and says, “We’re all just trying to prove ourselves one game at a time.”
Trevino says that they will turn it around because, “no one on this team enjoys losing so this cannot continue.” The Rangers are hungry to get better and to win games, all they ask for is a little time.
The Rangers have seemed to turn the corner following a rough few weeks of playing TRAC schools. From now on the Rangers look to dominate on the diamond.
