This year brings with it changes to Redwood High School’s traditions. Homecoming, a week worth of lunchtime activities, rallies, parades, and a football game, will look different this year compared to years past.

The event, which is usually scheduled to happen within the first couple months of the school year, has been moved to the week of April 26-30th.

In preparation for the week of homecoming, ASB’s freshman class president, Keira Bixler ’23, says that “ASB has done our best to keep all interaction virtual while still creating a great atmosphere on campus.” To keep students socially distant, “lunchtime activities and assemblies will all be done online.” Bixler says that students can still expect “fun dress-up days and decorations” around campus.

The theme, The Traditions We Missed, was chosen in hopes of allowing students to feel some sort of normalcy.

Similar to past homecoming picnics at Redwood, Bixler says “ASB is planning on having a homecoming court along with the traditional,” but modified, “social distanced picnic.” The nominee luncheon will be on April 22nd at 11:30 in the quad.

ASB Treasurer, Anyah Tillman ’21 says all 35 nominees will be invited to the event. “Social distancing and safety measures” will be in use. “All lunchtime activities will only be participated by just the nominee herself through a virtual setting, and just like previous years the points for the nominees will be accounted for.”

Unlike the traditional homecoming, Tillman says “this year, due to safety measures and guidelines in place to keep our Rangers safe…the nominees will not [have] an escort.” Along with this, the annual parade and crowning ceremony will be held in the Mineral King Bowl. “Each nominee will be able to bring 4 guests and we will have performances from dance force, cheer, and the national anthem sung by two ranger choir members.”

As of now, community members and students will not be allowed to enter the bowl and watch the ceremony.

In contrast to the usual presentation of the winner, Tillman says that “instead we decided to do a balloon reveal where each nominee will be given a balloon with confetti inside but one of them holds a different color than the rest. After a countdown, the revealing of our 2020-2021 homecoming nominee will be announced.”

Voting opens on the 21st and will close on the 23rd. Seniors can find the link to vote in the bio of Redwood’s Instagram page.
