The summer of 2022 was full of experiences for Redwood Rangers Morgan Castaneda ‘23, Brenna Brasil ‘24, and Daniela Ceballos ‘24.
Castaneda went on a 12-day cruise that took her along the British Isles, including 9 stops along Ireland, Scotland, the UK, and France.
Castaneda “noticed a lot about the difference between US architecture and European architecture.”
The look of the buildings was not the only culture shock, Castaneda says the shock in culture on the road in Europe saying, almost everything is different in Europe, “Everyone drives so much more aggressive over there!”
Castaneda made sure to make visits to popular European attractions, “we usually would walk up and down the downtown areas and popular attractions.” and almost always made sure to grab a bite to eat.
Brasil traveled to the Portuguese Island, the Azores for 2 and a half weeks this summer.
She enjoyed doing “island activities” such as “hiking, swimming, and spending time with family.”
What took Brasil by surprise was that “[her] grandfather would point out people on the street and say that they were [her] cousins”
Brasil said, “I felt like I was related to the entirety of the island.”
In the Azores, Brasil traveled by foot to most of her destinations, “I forgot what it is like to have to walk by foot to every destination, I am so used to getting in a car for even small distances.”
Ceballos took a road trip that led her through the United States.
She says about her experience, “I went around some states, including Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona.”
Even while staying in the United States, Ceballos still faced cultural differences, she learned about how the “weather was different compared to Visalia” and how the style of clothing, talking, and food was also extremely different.
