The Redwood Rangers Baseball team secured an 8-7 victory on Saturday on the road against Edison High School.
On Saturday, March 12, the Rangers beat the Edison Tigers by the score of 8-7 to improve to (4-3) on the season. The win comes two days after the Rangers lost 7-2 to the Liberty Patriots. The story of the Rangers’ matchup against the Patriots was the ability of Liberty to come up with big hits in the later innings. Going into the fourth inning, the score was 2-3, but the Patriots were able to score 4 more runs in innings 3-6 and not allow the Rangers to score again, and that was ultimately the difference-maker.
Pitcher Reece Bueno, ‘23 found himself very impressed with the approach of the Liberty batters. “The hitters definitely had a good approach and it made it difficult to work in different pitches. Facing a team like that will definitely allow me to be prepared for upcoming games.”
Whenever a team comes out on the losing end it’s tough, but it’s always encouraging when a player realizes that tough opposition is gonna make him and his team better and prepared for what’s to come.
While Thursday’s matchup against Liberty was challenging and tough for the Rangers. Saturday’s matchup against Edison appeared to be just what the doctor ordered in many respects. The Rangers had a season-high 13 hits and scored a very impressive 8 runs.
This game was dominated by the Rangers, the only hiccups for Redwood came in the seventh and final inning. Edison was able to come up with an incredibly impressive six runs in the seventh inning to make the score 8-7, but in the end, the Rangers were able to hold on and emerge victorious.
When looking at standout performances from this weekend’s game, pitcher Daniel Parker, ‘22 had a very productive day on the mound with 5 innings pitched, 6 strikeouts, and zero runs allowed.
Parker finds himself very happy with his game and feels it sets him up nicely heading into WYL play. Parker says, “It felt really good to have a game like that going into WYL play. I’m excited to get into the league and make a statement.”
Offensively, catcher Bo Rico, ’23 was a standout player and had a tremendous game. Rico went 4-4 on the day with one run, and two RBI’s.
Rico found himself locked in on Saturday and he believes that was the key to his success. Rico says, “I was locked in on Saturday. My teammates around me brought the energy and we rode with it all game.”
Redwood’s pitching has been very good all season. However, the Rangers have not been as potent on the offensive end, so seeing the offense click on Saturday was really great to see.
Ranger head coach Dan Hydash came out of Saturday’s game feeling really happy with the improvements made in the hitting department. Hydash says “Players and coaches have been working hard to make the adjustments needed to get our bats going and I think it’s starting to pay off… It was exciting and encouraging to see us swing the bats like we did Saturday.”
