Que Concha, a new business, in Visalia has been a popular spot for students and people all around. The food truck has been open for about 5 years, and the new shop opened on October 1st, 2022.
Students here at Redwood express their perspective on their experience as a satisfied customer at Que Concha, a popular place to get sweets. Maria Romo and Noah Maldonado are the owners of the new business in Visalia.
Romo says, “[Que Concha] started with a journal and idea. I was recently married and money was especially difficult for Noah and I.”
Romo “knew [she] had to start a business, but wasn’t sure how. She started to journal businesses and concepts, and landed on “a new age coffee shop/dessert shop.”
Starting a business comes with challenges that are faced every day. Romo says, “We didn’t have enough money… didn’t know the regulations for owning a business… [and] didn’t feel comfortable with speaking English.”
Even with challenges, Romo and Maldonado, “learned through calling and talking to people in charge of permits… [and] learned how to let people know English isn’t a strong suit for [them].”
“Graciously, everyone has been very kind to us about it,” says Romo.
Que Concha has faced their biggest challenge yet with it being a slow winter season. The businesses plumbing bursting leaving them with complications.
Adding changes to the menu is bringing in new customers and appealing to more.
“We are curating our menu to be more warm by adding espresso and lattes in hopes of getting more people to visit us,” says Romo.
The story behind the food truck is “one having an idea and being disciplined to work in this every day.”
Romo and Maldonado says, “Our biggest strength was bringing concha sundaes to the central valley… so we liked the Spanish ring the name has.”
Romo and Maldonado moved to Visalia after they got married. “We wanted to have an establishment where our costumers didn’t have to look for our location anymore,” Romo says.
“I am grateful our community doesn’t have to wait in the hot sun or cold in long lines to order from us anymore. The shop is a cute little place and I love it,” says Romo.
The Horcha-Rita consists of a horchata and coffee with a concha.
Emilia Solis ’25, says, “I would 100% recommend Que Concha. Their business is amazing and the support they get from their costumers is insane.”
When Solis went to Que Concha, she got the conchata. Which is horchata with a concha on top.
Solis’s favorite part about the shop “is the way they decorated it and that they display their merchandise.”
Solis has gone to Que Concha a few times before it became a shop in Visalia.
“Que Concha is just an all around amazing small business and the owners are so lovely and amazing,” says Solis.
Jonathan Luna ’24, says, “Iv’e tried Que Concha about a year ago and recently went to their new opening, which was exciting for them, so it was nice.”
Luna’s favorite item is the concha icecream sundae.
“It’s nice of [Que Concha] to open up a shop because it’s a combination of mexican food and sweets,” says Luna.
