With Covid-19 and online distance learning happening, the upcoming freshman class wasn’t able to get the full introduction to Redwood High school.
Instead of being able to go on the field trip to Redwood, teachers and the administrators are “sharing… the academics and career education via videos and presentations” says David Pasquini. Preparing the 8th graders for their high school life “meant students [had to get] acquainted with using the computer for much more than just typing essays.”
David Pasquini, Assistant Principal for the 7th graders at Green Acres Middle School, says, “One of the key ways that we’re preparing kids is encouraging them to speak up and voice their opinions.” With being on Zoom and learning through the Chromebook “it’s even more critical that we hear… how they’re managing life and social stuff.”
Pasquini says, “We’re letting them know that all the work counts… It’s a part of the everyday life at high school.” Being able to advocate for themselves and taking the responsibility for grades and actions is “one of those next steps in maturing into a high school student.”
For the students with older siblings, Pasquini “thinks they’ll rely a lot on their experiences and guidance.” Some problems Pasquini says the upcoming freshmans might face include: “[not] remembering their locker combination, shins aching from… the bridge… and finding a sweet spot for lunch.”
“… there’s nothing like being on campus, going to the rally and really learning about life as a Ranger.”

Kimberly Montgomery, is a History and Leadership teacher at Green Acres Middle School. As a teacher, Montgomery is “still doing everything [she] can to prepare [the students] for high school…” but, the lack of time has been the “biggest obstacle”.
Montgomery talks about getting involved, participating in events, and to try everything to figure out what is the most fun. She says, “Adapt to the world around you and experience whatever you can at Redwood. Make the most out of the opportunities that are given to you.”
Montgomery says, “I think this year’s students are going to be well-prepared in terms of being responsible… and self-reliant.” She “thinks students will be so excited to be back on campus and participating in sports.” The students and teachers have “gained a new appreciation for campus life… and I don’t think we will take that for granted ever again,” she says.
