This winter season, the Girls and Boys Basketball and Soccer teams all advanced to the Central Section playoffs although all the teams’ journeys stopped at quarterfinals or the first round.
The Lady Rangers basketball team, (22-8), seeded as 5th in the Division II, hosted their first playoff game at home on February 12th where they came out on top against 12th seeded Morro Bay. Final score being 68-33, the team was led by Clarissa Chavez with 22 points and Janessa Haro with 16. They then played away for their quarterfinals game at 4th seeded Tehachapi on February 14th after a very long all-day trip. They fell short losing by 9, 59-68. The team will lose 5 seniors but still have the other half of the team to carry on the legacy. The team has been very productive over the season after winning the Exeter Christmas Tourney and coming second in WYL behind Hanford with a league record of 5-2. The team will lose 5 seniors but still have the other half of the team and potentially pull up some fresh faces to carry on the legacy.
On the boys end, Redwood played away as the 12th seed at Porterville, 5th seed, for the first round on Tuesday, February 13th for DII. They were defeated 61-52 in their first round of playoffs. They finished league with 5-5 after losing their last league game to Mt. Whitney 63-64 a few weeks back. Despite minor setbacks with injuries and ineligibility, the team came back from their rough start to close the season with an overall record of 12-17 including some big wins against teams like Monache and Hanford twice. Led by 4 seniors, the team will lose some leadership but many juniors are hopeful to fill these roles.
For soccer, the girls came straight off their recent league championship for the 8th year in a row and finished with an overall record of 19-7-2. After winning Valley DII two years ago, the girls were placed in DI last season. This post-season, they played as the 8th seed against the 9th seeded Paso Robles where Redwood hosted Paso Robles on February for the first round. They won 2-1 in overtime and advanced on to quarterfinals. After first date got rained out, the game was played on February 19th but the girls fell to Clovis North, the top seeded team, 3-1. Clearly, the girls had a great season with big wins against teams like Hanford and Twice to Golden West. The girls finished out their league, 9-1, and closed with their win against Mt. Whitney, 1-0 last Wednesday. With a young but deep team, the girls will return very strong next year as well.
Boys soccer competed on their home turf on Tuesday, February 12th as the 8th seed and ended their season to 9th seed Stockdale in the first round. They fell to Stockdale 1-0 but had a good league going 5-5 and overall record 13-12-1. Some of their biggest wins and games this season were 2-1 against Clovis West, 2-1 against El Diamante, and 2-1 against Edison. They had a hard fought season and prepare for an off-season before summer training or for graduating seniors, to start looking into their college choices.
Both Boys and Girls Wrestling are still competing at State this week and a separate story will be published next week.
Although all basketball and soccer are done for this winter season, teams seem hopeful for next season and look forward to more successful runs like previous years. But, now that spring is is session, our Baseball, Softball, Track and Swim/ Dive teams look to come out on top in league and also deep into the playoff seasons.
