“What do students think about exercising and doing physical activities under the massive hot temperature of the sunlight?” The Tulare county is a hot place, it rarely ever rains. These two students who recently became freshmen this year, gave their opinions about how Physical Education has affected their performance.
“Hot weather makes us more tired, it makes us all sweaty, and it’s gross” Jackie Oliveira, being a former student at Redwood has demonstrated how the practices of Physical Education under certain weather measures have passed from elementary, middle school to high school. “I wish we could have our class in the gym, it’s less hard” she has been doing this for the past 3 weeks.
Coleman Sprague is their Core Physical Education teacher, ultimately they have been running miles, going up and down the staircase of the Redwood football field, and playing hockey inside the tennis court.
Danica Palardy has said, “I think it’s unfair to be under the sun’s heat, it makes us tired faster.” Some students get to spend their Core Physical Education period in the Gym depending on their teachers. Each teacher has a different choice of place for all their students to be active at.
“I think students will be affected in the beginning because the incoming freshmen don’t tend to exercise a lot over the summer. We ease into it so they are safe in the heat of the summer.” Sprague said. He claims that none of his students have suffered of heat stroke before, “No, never. A lot of complaining though.”
The main reason why some some students haven’t been in the gym is because of the turns PE teachers take, their schedule is very tight and there are a few options of where to have everyone be active at, “A lot of the other PE classes are occupying the gym, we trade off.”
He gives enough time for students to get water and thinks PE clothes are the best kind of clothing for the class, “I will give them a couple opportunities to hydrate, and I think their PE clothes are good because it is a dry fit material and the sweat will dry faster, if the kids wore cotton the shirts it would be drained. All in all, it wouldn’t be safe to have any other material.”
Students still complain about the weather, however, teachers are doing everything that is possible to lessen the amount of all these complaints by taking some measures in this case.
