On Tuesday, September 25, 2018, Redwood students were pulled out of their English classes for about 25 minutes for an informative assembly on the new and improved “Hero System.” It’s called PBIS and was set up by Mr. Marroquin, RHS’s newest assistant principal, who is excited for the new changes that the new system will bring.

The video and slideshow presented were all orchestrated by Marroquin.  Redwood principal Mr. Shin voiced his opinion in the introduction in hopes of maintaining that ultimate goal of “working hard, getting involved, and being nice.” The new program is meant to “put the T.R.U.E. expectations from the posters [in classrooms] into action and show what it truly means to be a Ranger,” says Marroquin.

The new points based incentive program seems very attractive for students who can redeem their rewards before and after school at the Redwood Store which will be run by trustworthy and responsible students. Some of these rewards include: food, school merch, parking incentives, bridge passes, etc. The rubric regarding the things you can redeem with points earned and how to recieve points will be posted in classrooms within the next week.

Marroquin sympathizes with the teachers who felt the old HERO program was  a challenge for them to update and put in points for specific students. He hopes to make the new program more student involved because it allows them to check how many points they have through the app and online.

This new system was created in hopes of addressing problems such as using clean language, walking bikes and skateboards to the racks, using the right side of the bridge at all times, and getting to class on time as well as honoring students who follow the TRUE expectations at all times.

Marroquin ends with this, “There’s something about being a Ranger that’s unique to Redwood and which separates us from all other VUSD schools…where doing the right thing, feels good.” Although the school has changed the system, the main objective of the program stays the same. The work put into this by administration will hopefully resonate with students and the program will be successful.
