The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony, will honor the best films of 2019, at February 9, 2020, 5:00 PM PST

The Oscars have been going on for 91 years, the first show was back in 1929 but it only lasted for about 15 minutes. Now they will normally last for about three and a half hours. The first person to ever win an award was Emil Jannings for best actor for his leading roles in silent films. There was around 270 guests at the first Academy Awards but it wasn’t called the Oscars for another few years.

Bigelow is he first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director

This year the Oscars are on February 9th, the Oscars are known for getting awards based on artistic and technical merit in the film industry.

The Oscars are one of the most important award shows to many people, some of the nominations are based on best picture, best leading role actress, best leading actor role, best director and many more. But this year there is not one woman who has been nominated for best director it has all been men this year who have gotten nominated for this award. Over the years there has only ever been five women nominated for best director and there has only been one woman who has won that award, Kathryn Bigelow. She won the award for her 2008 movie, “The Hurt Locker” and she will remain the only woman to have this award for this years Oscars.

The nominations for best director this year are, Martin Scorsese, Bong Joon-ho, Quentin Tarantino, Todd Philips, and Sam Mendes. Many people are outraged by not having any women nominated and this isn’t the first time it has happened. Since the first show in 1929 there has only ever been five women who have been nominated for best director, that was in 1929 and it’s now 2020 and the only one that has ever won was Kathryn Bigelow.

Many people are outraged by this but they are also not surprised at all “In news that will surprise no one, the Oscars have yet again boxed women out of the category for Best Director”, in the article “Esquire” by Adrienne Westenfeld. The Oscars have been known for shutting women out when it comes to this nomination, for many people, no one is surprised by this but for others they are upset by this and do not think it is fair to the women who have made such amazing movies and don’t even have a nomination for their work. It is sad for the women who have done such amazing work in their movies and they’re not even getting awards for award worthy work.
