Megan Yang- Writer and Editor

I am a writer and editor for the News section of the Gigantea. I have been in Journalism since my freshman year of 2020-21. I enjoy writing and talking to students about their experiences and viewpoints on certain subjects.

I write and edit for the News section for the Gigantea. When there is an upcoming event or news that needs to be reached to the students, I cover those stories. I have learned that student voices are important and need to be shared. Upcoming news that students need to know about is what makes writing and sharing the information important because it is a way for the Gigantea readers to obtain information on their school or any new events. I am proud of being able to share students voices and allow their side to be heard.

Semester 1 Stories

New Business In Visalia: Que Concha

This is a story I wrote to reach Redwoods audience about a new business. This shows my ability to talk to people outside of Redwood, while being able to connect it back to Ranger life.

This story matters because it enabled students and the community to welcome a new business, as well as hearing from Redwood students who have had Que Concha before it became a shop.

VUSD Board Of Education Revises Graduation Requirements

This is a story my team and I wrote together to let students and the community know about recent changes that will be applied to the class of '28. It covers the VUSD board point of view the class it'll affect, and stats on what adding another year of math can do. This story showed my skills of being able to reach out and connect with students to allow their voices to be heard.

This story matters because it involves student voices and when it comes to new changes that will affect their high school years, it's important to get their opinions about new policies.

Groppetti Automotive recognizes auto shop students, Hailey Meraz and Ali Luna

This is a story I wrote that recognizes two students, Hailey Meraz and Ali Luna. They were awarded with certificates for their hard work with the internships at Groppetti Automotive. This story shows my skills of attending an event and being able to get all my interviews that were needed to cover the story.

This story matters because it covers two students' success and doesn't let their hard work go unrecognized.

The GoFan App, A New Way To Get Into Games, Is Introduced To The New School Year

This is a story I wrote to let students know that the way to get into all sports games, had changed for the 2022-2023 school year. The GoFan app is internet based and card only. This shows my interviewing skills of keeping the information short and straightforward to know the key information students will need.

This story matters because not every student has access to a card and freshmen are coming into highschool blind, so it helps students know the upcoming changes.

Reflection

Where have I been?

Before I took journalism my freshmen year, I assumed this class would revolve around writing. I didn't know that Redwood had a school newspaper, so it surprised me that journalism was in charge of it. When it was added to my schedule, I was very confused because I had never heard of the class, until I got to high school.

Where am I now?

Being a journalist has taught me many things: Eye contact is a big deal, hand shakes are greetings, and there are stories that must be heard. I am now able to reach out of my bubble and talk to adults in a professional sense. I can now keep eye contact without having to look away and learn to have a grip hand shake. I can easily talk to students and get their opinions about events or topics that concern them.

Where am I going?

Next semester, my 2 personal goals are to be able to expand my writing skills and deliver stories in a way that isn't just writing. I want to work with more in person interviews and find different ways to get a story to be heard. My goal for my section is to be able to get stories out quicker.
