Band finished Marching season this month in November. It was a lot of hard work but in the end they were able to win multiple awards for all of their hard work. These awards were two 1st place awards in the music division, a 2nd place award, and caption awards in two of their competitions. No one thought it would turn out this well, but the year surprised them.
Audrey Gricewich ‘20, plays flute, commented that, “I was expecting to hate it, I was expecting to want to quit….but it just turned out so much better….I think if people just realize some change can be a good thing and then they can get better at it.”
Every student I talked to, said a lot of the same things. The majority said they knew it would be hard to adjust to a new band director because they were so used to their old director. Jose Guerrero ‘19, drum-major/saxophone player, was one of those people in the majority. He said, “I think that the biggest challenge was adapting to what he envisioned our band to be versus what our previous band director ran.”
However, towards the end of the season, the whole marching band really pulled it together. James Lucio ‘22, saxophone player, said that even though “we had some struggles in the beginning, we pulled through and we ended up on a really high note.” Diego Castro ‘19, trombone player, even went as far to say that in the beginning of the season he thought they were going turn out pretty bad but, “we turned out to be pretty good and we even shot our over estimated score.”
Marching Band didn’t only win awards, they also have done a lot of fun stuff, throughout the season. Micaela Ashford ‘19, flute, commented that, “My favorite part of the marching season was probably Sierra Cup Classic. We got to go over to Fresno for the whole day and perform in the Fresno State bull, which I thought was pretty cool.” Mostly, when asked this question people voted for Sierra Cup Classic but, other favorites were tailgate parties, going to the football games, and hanging out with the newcomers and teaching them music.
Along with fun moments and fun events, band has played many, many songs. Some people would say there are so many that it is hard to pick the best one. The top favorites were Fusion Movement 2, Fireball, The First Movement, Baby Shark, Hay Baby, and the NFL Fox theme song. Overall, this has totalled out to be an amazing season for Marching Band.
