The vista lunch slump, has students getting stuck at the exit to lunch, it cuts into students lunch time and is an inefficient process to excuse students to lunch.

Lunch is the biggest part of the school day for students, it’s time to catch up with friends and go off campus to enjoy their break. Redwood has three lunch exits, two on the main campus and one of vista,

The vista exit has caused some problems for students who go off over there.

The exit creates a bottleneck shape and causes students to cram and squeeze together to get off of campus, students fight their way to the front of the line.

Amelia Fultz, ‘26, says, ”It’s a very inefficient way to leave Vista. I think it’s also a little bit dangerous because there have been times when I’ve seen people start tripping.”

Fultz said she has seen students getting hit with backpacks as students bottleneck into the exit space. She also says that the traffic jam comes from how the exit is set up, it has taken her up to five minutes to get out for lunch before because of the vista set up.

The vista door is where the scanner is for students to scan out. Fultz’s solution would be moving the scanner inside so that coming from either direction on vista they can get scanned and then avoid the traffic jam at the door.

Reid Sampietro, ‘28, says, “I try to get out for lunch on Vista, and it’s always backed up.”

The Vista traffic jam holds students up from getting to lunch. Sampietro said that whenever he has lunch plans with other students the lunch exit makes him late.

Sampietro said, “Having a shorter lunch than most schools, we don’t get as much time to go to lunch and eat.”

Ms. Judy Sosaya, a Vista admin says, “I know there’s times that there’s a large group , and it does take a little while and especially because sometimes we don’t get a really good connection, so it does take a little bit.”

Ms. Sosaya said that there is always a bit of a hold up, and is thankful that students are so patient. She does think that if another admin worked at the door during the lunch period for scanning out students, the exit would probably be more efficient, but she also recommends that students do their best to have their minga or ID pulled up and ready when they go to the exit.

Ella Noblitt, ‘27, says, “it’s as crowded as it can get, I think it’s a really small doorway, and there are a lot of people that push.”

Many different solutions to the Vista Lunch slump have come up, such as opening another exit spot, giving an additional administrator to the lunch exit, or simply changing how the exit is set up.

Ms. Sosaya says, “Just be patient with me when I’m working it,”
