The week leading up to Valentine’s Day is a big deal here at Redwood High School. Individual paper hearts with every single student’s name on them are placed around campus for students to find. Posters and props create a fun environment for Love Week.
We see all of these decorations, but who puts it all together? ASB, that’s who. How do they prepare for the function that is a love week?
Lexi Ellis ’23 describes how planning weeks like Love Week is a process. Ellis explains, “The first thing we do is choose dress-up days and get into committees. Each committee has a different job. Such as lunchtime activities, campus decorations, advertisement, etc. from there we work and make posters, decorations, and get the campus ready.” When asked how Love Week is different compared to other spirit weeks Ellis tells us that Love Week is focused on how the campus looks, opposed to Homecoming and Cowhide when it is more about how the stadium looks. ASB is, without a doubt, very hard work that requires dedication and a ton of school spirit. However, Ellis is up to the task because of the pride it brings to be part of putting such events together.
Laney Williams ’21, explains that every dress up week takes time and effort. Williams says, “I think the main thing is writing down everyone’s name on a heart and making all the hearts. It’s still fun it just takes a long time and so do all the themed posters.”
Yes, they do have the energy to be able to do this and put on activities and dress-up weeks but they also do get tired. “I think people often overlook that part but it never gets mentally tiring because you’re always surrounded by really creative and supportive people that are always working together to come up with new ideas,” says Williams.
Jada Griffiths, ’20, ASB President, is very busy and when it comes to Love Week it makes her schedule even busier. “As the president, I create the committees alongside the activities director, Mrs. Aston, for the ASB class and the special spirit weeks.” Her job is to delegate tasks to each committee so the work is spread out among the class. But all of this takes so much work. “Honestly the hardest thing is probably taking the “LOVE” letters out of the Sea-train…they are so heavy and we have to carry them so far.”
ASB puts on all these activities for students at Redwood to enjoy. Love week is just one of the many fun weeks! This goes to show how much ASB does for our school!
