After a battle of grit and determination, the Redwood Varsity Girls Basketball Team faces defeat against Porterville last Thursday in a 36-45 game.
Sydney Calderon, ‘24, is a point guard for the Varsity Girls Basketball team. She says, “We started to play well in the last two halves. We were slow in the beginning, but we picked it up and started playing better together.”
Calderon says, “The most difficult part was most definitely finding a way to get the ball in the basket for us and a lot of turnovers.”
Calderon finishes by saying, “The responsibility I hold for my team is make sure everyone’s energy is up, making sure no one’s putting their head down, and just making sure everyone’s good and having fun out there.”
Angelina Miranda, ‘25, is a guard for the team. She says, “I think we did good, we fought hard. I think we could have maybe tried a little harder at the beginning, but I think we just had a lot of grit and fight in us.”
Miranda says, “I think we can pass the ball more and grow a stronger connection.” Miranda finishes by saying, “I did okay, I feel like I could have been a little more aggressive on defense and made more shots.”
Ahriel Madden, ‘26, a center, says, “I think we did really good, we were down by just a little bit and the energy wasn’t fully there, but overall I think we did pretty good.”
Madden says, “I think to improve we need more chemistry. I say we need a lot more chemistry, more talking on the court, and just playing the game how we normally do.”
Madden finishes by saying, “I feel like I could’ve done better, but I did what I could with the time that I had on the court. I do think that my energy does help the team out during the game and has an effect on how we do.”
Jordan Powell, ‘27, a power forward for the team, says, “I think we tried our best against Porterville last night and overall we did our best. I do think I did good but there are some things that I could improve on.”
Powell says, “Some things we could definitely do to improve on is having a lot more communication, trusting our bigs, and passing the ball down, and when we fix this it’ll definitely help us out.”
Powell finishes by saying, “Everyone has a responsibility on the team and we all play a role on the team. Mine is being a powerful big, so I can get the rebounds, pass it to my teammates and then hopefully they trust me to do that.”
