During seasons, many sports have their week long tryouts, these tryouts can last more than a week. Some sports like baseball, girls soccer, dance, and many more, have a wide variety of students tryout for the team. All the sports go through the CIF standards, and they also follow some of the school rules.

What is CIF?

CIF, is the California Interscholastic Federation. This federation is uniquely positioned to foster student growth in values and ethics. They make sure that all teams will know how to gain a victory in the proper way with honor. This provides an opportunity to influence the athletic community for the better. CIF strives to gain the integrity of the student and adults across the state by showing them the concepts of sportsmanship, honesty and quality academics. They also work with the schools to give equity, quality, character, and academic development.

Coaches perspective

Baseball, and Soccer are two of the most popular teams on the Redwood Campus. Baseball, begins their tryouts soon after the end of fall sports. Coach Hydash, and Coach Blair leads the JV and Varsity teams. Coach Vieira starts conditioning for his Varsity girls soccer team at the end of the fall season. Conditioning lasts about two weeks before any cuts are made for these soccer girls.

All the athletic programs are overlooked by Mr. Matt Sozihno, Athletic Director. Mr. Sozinho implies that there are no specific rules that have to be followed by coaches during tryouts. Neither the school nor CIF have any mandatory rules.

Coach Hydash and Coach Blair, look for their starting lineup for their spring sport early in the year. Coach Blairs tells that every sport has a specific date for when the tryouts can begin. Every student that wishes to tryout is welcome, and the tryouts usually last between three and five days. “We just do different elements within the game that we need to see the student athlete accomplish.” Being on the team doesn’t just consist of playing the game, it also consists of being able to manage a team setting. Blair makes sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to tryout, especially when being released from a winter sport late.

Girls Soccer is a popular sport here on campus. Coach Vieira handles the varsity girls. Vieira gives everyone the same opportunity to show what they’ve got and how they can play the game. Vieira says that the coaching staff and himself look at what each individual girl can do. They give them all the same time to play with the ball and to make sure they know how to handle the ball.

Each coach handles their tryouts different, but they all have the same goal: create a succeeding team.
