As we enter October, the big buzz on campus is all about Harvest, who’s going with who, and who’s wearing what. A big tradition of Harvest is all the harvest proposals that happen around this time. Guys will go out of their way to ask their date to the dance, and make it a special moment, each of them will never forget.
Often times, these proposals are held in front of a crowd at school, and guys make big signs with something special they wrote for the person they are asking, and they try and make the moment as memorable as possible.
There are always people standing by, recording this moment, in hopes that the person they ask will say yes. But if you think about it, how could anyone really say no in this instance? Whitney Mitchell, ’21, says that “… People shouldn’t have to spend their time and money just to ask girls to dances. Especially when they know the answer is yes. I would feel very on the spot and very pressured if I was asked in front of a big crowd. I wouldn’t like everyone recording me and waiting for my answer.”
However on the spot someone may feel, there are also proposals that mean a lot to people. They want to be a part of the tradition and do it the right way. Katherine Tejada, ’21, says that “… I don’t think it’s necessary, but I think it’s adorable and cute and it’s part of the whole culture and tradition. I’d feel special to know that someone is going through that much commitment and hardships just for me.”
Harvest proposals are a tradition throughout many high schools, and it’s always great to get involved and be a part of something big, but big crowds and lots cameras aren’t for everyone.
