As the winter season is approaching, so is the Redwood Girls Wrestling team, and they are preparing for a new, strong season.
A lot of people view wrestling as a “boy-dominated” sport, but many don’t know that the Redwood girls can do anything as good as the boys.
Wrestling is a hard sport to stay committed to. It can be mentally draining and is physically tiring on your body.
Coach Ramirez says that during the off-season, they work on strength training and technique so that, “once the season begins, the pace of the practices goes faster. Off-season practices allow the coaches to slow things down and focus on technical aspects of the sport.”
For being such a hard sport, Coach Ramirez says that one of the biggest challenges is “growing the numbers on the team.”
Although they are gaining more each year, Ramirez also says, “wrestling is physically and mentally demanding, which has led to a handful of girls removing themselves from the team, some of those being key players.”
As for the team itself, their goals remain the same. Redwood Girls Wrestling has been bringing home medals from the CIF State Champions, and Coach Ramirez says, “We want to continue the rich tradition of having a successful season; we are on a 4-year streak and look to keep that alive.”
