The Redwood girls 2018 team previously just won their 15th WYL title in a row. This is a big deal because it means Redwood hasn’t lost a single WYL match since 2003. They reign as the 2017 DII Central Valley Champions and are pushing for a back-to-back title.
Claire Yang ‘19 took part in the WYL from the singles bracket and she came out on top. She has won WYL the past four years. She is still going strong, and plans to plan tennis in college. “To know that I won WYL all four years, I mean I haven’t really processed that fact because it happened over such a long period of time. It is a really cool accomplishment,” said Yang. She is currently undefeated within this season. After winning WYL, Yang stated, “It felt pretty good knowing that I got one step closer to achieving my overall goal which is winning valley this year.”
Sophie Degn, ‘21, and Maddy Degn, ‘19, are sisters and teammates. Being on the tennis team together has allowed them to have a better bond. Maddy said, “It is fun, it can get a little challenging knowing that we are related.” Sophie told us, “We do not fight…it helps me push myself so I can become better like she is.” They have pushed each other to their full potential, and are always trying to be better players.
The tennis team’s key to success was teamwork. They worked together and won together. “It felt really good…I was glad that I was able to do it with my team.” says Sophie. Every girl has a specific job on the team and each work hard day in an out whether it be in practice, during a match, or own their own time.
Our Ranger tennis team works hard and achieves greatness. “Come out next year, to the tennis team; we work hard,” said Yang.
