Point Guard #3 Jayda Barnes, ’28, has been playing basketball since she was a little girl.
Barnes shared she isn’t nervous being younger and the only freshman on the team, and said, “I’ve been playing up like my whole life.”
There are many differences between middle school and high school between academics and sports.
High school is very intense when it comes to sports, especially here at Redwood. Being on a varsity team and handling academics can be hard for any incoming freshman.
“I think it’ll be challenging but I think I could do it,” said Barnes on whether she would be able to manage being on a varsity team and her academics as well.
When asked if the game was different from middle school Barnes shared “the game is definitely more fast than middle school.”
Being on varsity Barnes is most looking forward to “hopefully making it to playoffs.”
Very rarely does a freshman make a varsity team. Redwood is known for their sports and making a varsity team your freshman year is something you could be known for.
Barnes stated that this is definitely her biggest accomplishment so far being in high school.
When asked what making varsity meant to Barnes she replied, “Making varsity just meant that my talents are showcasing and all of the hard work I put into it and it made me feel successful.”
Barnes was asked if the team has made her feel welcome as she is the only freshman on the team and she shared, “The girls have made me feel super welcomed.”
