Here’s the Five For Friday, bringing you five more songs into the spotlight for you. This week’s music is brought to you by five of Redwood's new staff members.
Mrs. Hulstine is the new Health teacher at Redwood High School. She used to be a dance instructor and was also a health and wellness instructor, teaching people in the gym industry for 19 years.
While being a teacher assistant for a semester this is her first year actually teaching health. She has been enjoying teaching her subject so far and has the goal to make sure all of her students pass.
“I think that the world needed me in a different capacity to help our youth. I’ve seen a lot of issues and complications in the fitness industry and I thought if I could help support our youth with health at a really early age, I could make a big difference in a different way.”
Mrs. Hulstine is a huge fan of music, even having a big range of music because of her brother who was a musician who was signed to a record label, Epic Records.
“I was exposed to so many different genres of music like punk rock, classic rock, and alternative. He got to tour with some really famous bands and stuff so I have a very wide genre of music thanks to him exposing me to stuff.”
She listens to music pretty much all day while she’s doing her everyday tasks on her preferred platform Sirius XM.
Mrs. Hulstine’s favorite song is “Just like Heaven '' by The Cure.
“There was a backstory that I used to believe in highschool but I don’t know if it’s actually true, the story about it that his girlfriend allegedly fell off a ledge and the music video is just beautiful and it’s just a beautiful song, it’s amazing. It’s just such a touching song and I love it.”
Mr. Hernandez is another new addition to Redwood’s staff teaching Math 2. He has done student teaching for a year and this is his first year actually teaching.
He has been enjoying teaching his subject so far this year and has the goal to be able to get along with his students as well as keeping his class in check.
“My goal really is to have good classroom management, and to rapport with people. So far it’s been building up, the first couple of days it was quiet but now I have people asking me what am I doing for the weekend and I’m asking people what they’re doing for the weekend without it feeling awkward.”
Mr. Hernandez is also an avid music lover, one of his favorite artists being The Strokes. His favorite genre of music is alternative rock.
While he’s grading classwork and when he’s working out in the gym is when he listens to music the most. He listens to music on Spotify but says that he might switch to Apple Music soon.
Mr. Hernandez’s favorite song is “Futures” by Jimmy Eat World.
“It just slaps, like in my brain it just sounds right.”
Mrs. Cerecedo is another new teacher on campus and teaches Spanish 1. This is her 22nd year of teaching, having taught math for 11 years and Spanish for 17 years and even taught both at the same time.
She has been enjoying teaching Spanish and she also hopes to be able to have fun while learning from both her peers and her students.
“I had really awesome elementary school teachers and I really admired them and wanted to be like them when I grew up. The funny thing is, I never taught elementary school.”
Mrs. Cerecedo is another big fan of music having her most played artist being Sara Bareilles. She usually listens to music when she’s in her car and plays music in her classroom on her preferred platform, Apple Music.
“I am drawn to singer/songwriters, but I listen to a bunch of stuff. In high school it was alternative, went through a rock en español phase, and a country one, pop, showtunes, R&B, hip hop, rock. Depends on my mood, I guess. I love good beats and harmonies. In Spanish, my favorite is Mariachi and old school Shakira.”
Mrs. Cercecedo’s favorite song is “Talk Too Much” by Reneé Rapp.
When asked what about the song that makes it her favorite she says, “The guitar and the harmonies in the chorus. The sound usually comes before the lyrics, for me.”
The final new teacher is Mrs. Jimenez (soon to be Mrs. Braun) and she is teaching PE and Link Crew. She has been teaching for 19 years, all of them included PE but she has also tried teaching ASB and she taught AVID for one year during COVID-19.
She enjoys teaching PE even on the hottest of days and she has been having fun seeing how to make Link Crew a very successful part of Redwood’s culture.
Mrs. Jimenez's goal this year is to make sure all of her students are successful and enjoy their time here. She is also really looking forward to Cowhide.
“I have always loved the outdoors and working with students. I was ordinally planning on teaching health and not PE. It’s funny how things work out. I got hired as an intern and thought I would just check it out. I ended up loving it and never left PE.”
Mrs. Jimenez is actually more of a podcast fan than a music one. Her favorite podcast is “Morning Wire” by Ben Shapiro and Jermey Boreing.
“It’s news of the world. Five minutes in the morning it gives me what’s going on in the world and five minutes in the afternoon. Anything news breaking or anything that feels important but it’s done very quick and very fast. It’s why I love it. It gives me an update without having to read anything and I know what’s going on.”
