Alex Perch, ‘24, is in Redwood’s varsity football team as their running back. He has been playing football for all four years of highschool and has played the sport since he was 9 years old.

Due to Covid-19, he didn’t get to play a football season as a freshman but he made sure that still attended practice. Soon as sophomore year rolled around he was placed into varsity and finally got to play.

Throughout his many years of playing, Perch’s favorite memory was when they beat Hanford during his Sophomore year.

“They were 5-0, 4-0, or something and they were supposed to beat us. We weren’t great that year, we missed some games for Covid. Everyone was expecting us to lose when we went out and that was the best game we played all year and we beat them.”

Perch is a fan of horror movies and says that his favorite one is the slasher film, ‘Scream.’

“I just enjoy it, I thought it was kinda fun. A little scary at parts.”

Another player, Moses Burk, ‘24, plays as receiver on Redwood’s football team. Burk has been playing for Redwood for all four years and has been playing football since he was 5 years old.

While being in Redwood football, Burk says his favorite moments were not only his great catches but also the friends made on the field.

“Just everybody being friends, just making new friends throughout the years. Plays wise, I made a one hand catch last year and that was probably one of my favorite things that happened.”

Burk is also a big horror movie fan as well as a big fan of the ‘Conjuring’ films.

“They’re pretty scary I guess. I just like the horror part of it, everything, the little paranormal stuff is cool to me. I like all of that.”

Basil “BJ” Wainwright, ‘24 is another four year player on Varsity and plays offensive line, playing mostly as tackle and guard.

“I started playing flag football in 7th grade but I started playing tackle in 8th grade and I’ve played all four years at Redwood.”

One of Wainwright’s favorite moments playing football was during his Sophomore year and it was the first game he played. He was just pulled up to Varsity and during a play he had knocked someone over and got “pancaked” while their running back made a touchdown.

“It was just a great moment because I felt validated, I was like I belong here on the field, I’m a good player.”

Wainwright isn’t particularly a fan of horror movies but he says that he did enjoy ‘The Conjuring.'

“I thought it was an interesting story, mostly, and the horror aspect added a little bit more suspense but it wasn’t like the whole thing, like it’s not just a scary violent movie.”

Aazir Khan, ‘24, is another Varsity player, his position being quarterback for Redwood’s football team. He has been playing in Redwood’s football since his Sophomore year but has been playing football since 5th grade.

His favorite moment playing football was during his Junior year at practice.

“We had Vongni, he’s a reporter for the ‘Times Delta’, he was at our practice and I got an interception and he got like a cool picture of it and I was in the article.”

Khan is a huge fan of horror movies, though most don’t scare him, he says that ‘The Conjuring’ is his favorite horror movie.

“I like the story a lot, they lived in a house and there was a spirit and I found it really cool. It was actually scary, it was one of the first scary movies I watched and I was actually scared. Like, I thought about it before I went to sleep.”

Finally, Erik Rico, ‘25, is a three year Redwood football player and is in Varsity as their quarterback. Overall he has been playing football since he was 7 years old.

Throughout his time as a football player his favorite moments from the sport are made outside the field and the plays he makes as a quarterback.

“The bonds that are created with football and the friendships that are made with football. Also I feel as a quarterback when you’re outside the pocket running with the ball it feels like it’s outside of what you’re supposed to be doing, throwing the ball, so it's kind of an energetic moment.”

Rico isn’t really a fan of horror movies, watching them occasionally for the Halloween season. However, he said he really enjoyed ‘Fear Street Part One: 1994’.

“That one was actually pretty good. It was more of like a teenage thing kind of, so it made it a lot more better. More relatable.”

That’s the Five For Friday bringing five more horror for you to watch during the Halloween season.
