Fall athletes are now finding that they are not able to try out for the winter sport that they desire to play until later on after the teams are basically already made. CIF Rules state that you cannot be playing more than one sport at a time. Therefore, athletes must wait until their current sport ends.
In most cases students who are still playing a fall sport and progressing will not be finished for about another month, this is Sophie Degn’s ‘21 case who moves on to state playoffs for tennis but plans on playing soccer for Redwood too. Degn stated how she felt about the rule and says “I think it is the right thing because I will be able to try out later on and they do not have to push the season back because my sport right now is advancing so much that I can’t tryout yet.”
Personally for Degn, she likes how there is no real break between sports for her because she feels that it keeps her in shape constantly and thinks that if there were a break then she would become lazier possibly affecting her performance. Degn also states “It may be a little bit easier to have a little time off but I like playing sports so it does not bother me too much.”
Mia Maciel, ‘22, who wants to play soccer also but moves on the Valley Championships for cross country, also has an opinion on the rule, she stated that “it is kind of unfortunate because if you want to do both it puts you at kind of a disadvantage for the winter sport because you have to finish your fall sport before trying out.” The athletes who are in a fall sport that are trying to play a winter sport are going to end up having to try out alongside the already made team.
Maciel also feels that “we should be able to take a week from our fall sport then go into the winter sport so we can get used to the team and the coaches and not be so just thrown in there, if there would be more of a gap I feel that it would be definitely better.”
