“A Christmas Story” comes to Redwood November 4, 5, and 6 at 7 pm. Redwood Drama presents their take on this Christmas classic. The play transports the audience to Christmas time in Hammond, Indiana in the 1980s.
The play tells the tale of young Ralphie, who spends his time dreaming of the “perfect” Christmas gift. Ralphie has always dreamt of being gifted a legendary Red Ryder air rifle, despite everyone saying he would “shoot his eye out.”
Ralphie often faces bullies, and tries to navigate life as a nine year old during the holiday season along with his friends and little brother, Randy.
Throughout the play, lots of fun set pieces and props can be seen, such as the iconic leg lamp that is strikingly similar to the one seen in the Christmas movie. A car scene between the characters appears with tires and car parts, as well as a Christmas mall Santa set up on stage with lots of color bringing everyone Christmas spirit.
The best part about the play would either be how these student actors were able to completely embody their characters or the way that they all came together to do so. From hair, makeup and costumes, students successfully set the scene for Ralphie with his family and friends.
The costumes under the stage lights, perfectly and accurately connected each actor to their character. There were many big jackets and coats to reveal the cold, winter setting that the play was set in. Along with the Santa costume, and 1980s style costumes such as layered coats.
Director and drama teacher, Mrs. Stacy Galvan once again creates a comedic yet sentimental feeling for our Christmas show this year and it cannot be missed.
Join Redwood Drama, and watch this amazingly put together play unfold. This play is for all ages, and has a wide variety of emotions. There are heartfelt moments as well as comedic ones, that leave the audience wanting to watch more.
It is very evident that every actor and actress put their hearts and souls into this play. Student actor Arlo Olson, ’23 plays the character Ralphie and is excited to show off everyone’s talent.
Olson goes on to express, “Everyone has worked really hard and I am very excited to see how it comes out.”
With all the action filled scenes, Olson admits that his favorite, “is the fight scene” and that audiences can look forward to seeing a fantastic show with more than one action scene.
An interesting perspective of the play is that there are two Ralphie characters casted, where one of them narrates the whole show while the other performs the actions of Ralphie.
Being able to experience Ralphie’s true opinions and thoughts throughout the show while still being able to capture his actions really adds to the humor and connection with the audience.
Student actor Brooklyn Burch, ’23 also plays the role of Ralphie and is, “so grateful that I got this chance to become Ralphie.”
Not only is performing on stage an amazing feeling for Burch, but the people that she was able to bond with during the experience made it even more amazing.
You do not want to miss the amazing performance by these student actors bringing not only Christmas spirit, but humor and entertainment as well.
“A Christmas Story” will be performed in the L.J. Williams Theater November 4, 5, and 6 at 7 pm. You can purchase tickets from Mrs. Stacy Galvan in the drama room or online.
