During the Fall season, students here at Redwood enjoy going to the fair. Two of the most popular and closest are the Tulare Fair that runs through September 15th – 19th, and the Big Fresno Fair that runs through October 6th – 17th.
A fair can be entertaining to anyone for different reasons, Jacob Huerta ‘25 shares his experience at the Tulare fair “I have had the rides where it was pretty fun, I’m a huge fan of roller coasters. I think it’s so fun, the adrenaline pumping makes it more fun.” Huerta also adds “We went to Hanger Cliff, that was really fun, after that we went to a swing ride where it picks you up and it starts spinning. That one was also really fun too.”
Fairs include many entertaining rides and amusements but some of the main attractions are also the one-of-a-kind fair foods, Huerta also says “ I have to say the popcorn or cotton candy”.
A fair experience can be different for everyone, Daniela Ceballos ‘24 explains her favorite part of a fair. “The rides are definitely my favorite part”
Ceballos also adds of any exhibits she has been to “I don’t go to any exhibits but I do go to the stands, supporting small businesses” additionally Ceballos adds her favorite food “My favorite fair food is funnel cake”
Elise Bradshaw ‘22 tells about her experience as an Ag student showing her lamb at the Tulare Fair. “I love showing, I showed Lambs this year and I really like not only showing but I like watching all the different animals. Specifically steers-those are very interesting. To control the animals and to be able to have the straight to do that” Bradshaw said one of the rides she ran to first at the 2021 Tulare Fair “We went to this drop ride, I can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s the drop ride where you just freely fall and it catches you”
Fairs also include many interesting exhibits to look around through.
Bradshaw adds some of the ones she went to. “I like to look around during my free time and one of the [exhibits]they had was different animals from North America and that was really cool to look at all the different species of snakes, birds- all different kinds”
At a fair, you do not only find rides, food, or exhibits but also Agricultural events such as the lamb showings by the FFA Ag students in the county. Mr. Coon, Redwood’s Ag teacher explains what fair brings to the community “County Fairs traditionally go all the way back in time. When they started their whole goal was to bring communities together usually around the harvest of the year and everybody would bring their best crops their best vegetables, their best pie recipes, and their best livestock, and they would come to a county fair and have a community celebration. Today I think they are carrying it on with today’s youth being the ones that are their competitors”
Fairs have much more to offer and a lot more of the agricultural side, how do fairs bring the community closer to the agricultural side of the county Mr.Coon answers “Well I think that if we look at our county is now, our county is still enormous in agriculture. But more people work in jobs outside of agriculture, so today when people go to the county fair it’s like they get back in touch with there roots. They get back with the agricultural side of the county and they feel maybe a little more connected to the land”
Bradshaw 22’ adds finally “It’s definitely worth it. There are so many rides, there are so many exhibits, and for everything else to look at and to educate yourself in so many different things in the fair. It’s really interesting just to go”.
