On December 13th, Harry Styles shook the world as he released his sophomore album, “Fine Line.” The track list was a collection of 12 songs, including 3 singles he released prior to the album dropping.
“Lights Up” was the first single he released on October 10th, 2019 then a few weeks later, he released “Watermelon Sugar.”
And just a few days before the album release, Styles hinted at another single with a random video about a made up island called Eroda and the story of a boy (Harry) and a fish. The video represents loneliness and isolation but the actual song “Adore You” (released on December 6th) tells a cute story of the boy and fish bringing together the community and sense of happiness.
“I’d walk through fire for you just let me adore you”
-Adore You
After all the waiting and anticipation, fans finally got what they wanted and so much more. The album (as predicted) ranges from joyful to heartbreak and all the in-between emotions.
“Falling,” “Cherry,” and “Fine Line” all represent the hurt and heartache of love and lust. These give off the same feelings as “Two Ghosts” and “From the Dining Table” from his debut album “Harry Styles” released in 2017.
“Cherry” seems to be a dedication to Styles’ ex-girlfriend, Camille Rowe. He included a voicemail from her in French at the end of the song and also seems to single her out with a few of the lyrics including “I just miss your accent and your friends.”
“Falling” is personally my favorite and on repeat everyday. Its piano tribute and meaningful words tend to pull at the heartstrings through his message about self doubt and overthinking the past.
“And I get the feeling that you’ll never need me again…”
-Falling
The title song,“Fine Line” wraps up the album as it takes you through the journey of both finding yourself and dealing with all of life’s obstacles yet in the end “we’ll be alright.”
“So many of the songs are about accepting yourself and perseverance which is a really important message to send to kids and adults alike in today’s society,” says super fan since the One Direction days, Chloë Sanchez, ‘20.
Besides the sad songs, Harry proves his maturity and growth through more upbeat songs like “Sunflower, Vo. 6,” “She,” and “Golden.” All three show off his vocal range and prove how much fun he really has while making his music.
“I’m out of my head, and I know that you’re scared because hearts get broken”
-Golden
Not only is he a beautiful man, musician, and lyricalist, but he has such a beautiful heart. One of his songs, “Treat People With Kindness” is a tribute to his campaign which raises money for charity through his 2020 tour sales and his website that sends a personalized compliment to you to spread love and positivity.
“Maybe, we can find a place to feel good and we can treat people with kindness…And if we’re here long enough we’ll see it’s all for us and we’ll belong”
-Treat People With Kindness
“Fine Line” captures the uniqueness and confidence Styles has been building up over the past few years as we see change in his clothing appearance, stage presence, and also choice of pop-rock style music.
From a holistic perspective, Sanchez says “Styles also does an amazing job of channeling decades of amazing artists into his own type of swag. It is because of all this that he’s gained massive respect among his fans and in the music industry as a whole.”
