What is the ‘Improv Show?’ The ‘Improv Show’ is a collaboration between three of Visalia’s high school drama programs: Redwood, El Diamante, and Golden West. The students participating play games with one another while also interacting with the audience.

“The ‘Improv Show’ is a team of about 10 to 15 students from each school. We play certain games, they’re improv games, like, ‘Who line is it anyway,’ type stuff. And we get together with the other schools. It’s not against each other, it’s with each other to make a good show. It’s not competition, it used to be,” says Mrs. Galvan, the drama teacher at Redwood High School.

This show has been around for a few years, initially starting off as a fundraiser, although they weren’t making much money for it. They ended up just having the show for the students to enjoy.

Due to Covid-19, the show had to be canceled. Even after schools were brought back and the mask mandates were lifted, the ‘Improv Show’ didn’t return due to the impact Covid had brought to the other schools, causing them to be unready and unable to perform.

Galvan says, “Last year, nobody was ready. Everyone was like, ‘No we can’t do this.”

Preparations that are being made for the show all come down to a list full of the games students are going to play.

Some of these games involve students only having a few select lines that can only be repeated while the other has complete free range.

“We’re making a scene out of those lines. The students haven’t seen the lines before, but it’s the same game every time. So to prepare we play those games over and over with different scenarios with different ideas.”

Tickets can be purchased at the show for 5 dollars at the door of El Diamante’s theater, be there or be square. Support your drama program.

Galvan says that because of all the different outcomes, the show is exciting and a must-see.

“Come see the show, it’s fun. It really is, we have such a good time.”
