The ASB Forum was held last Friday, May 4th. The live stream gave us a chance to meet the candidates and decide who we want to lead our school. The event was managed by the Redwood Gigantea and held in Mr. Vieira’s room. The two chief editors of the Gigantea MCed the event, Valeria Rojas and Krissy Hetherington. Starting the broadcast was the Sophomore Class VP candidates and ending was the ASB President candidates.
The Sophomore President and VP candidates were Brielle Alvarez and Alayla Ayala. Though being uncontested and therefore bound to win the position, the girls had wonderful ideas for the future and were enthusiastic to be leaders of their class.
“It’s okay to be outside the box, be who you want to be” – Brielle Alvarez ’22
There are two people running for Junior VP: Mia Gilcrest and Abel Ulloa. Ulloa is currently the Sophomore class President and both Gilcrest and Ulloa are members of ASB. Gilcrest is also a Volleyball player and active in multiple clubs. The Junior VP position is in good hands no matter who wins.
The position for Junior Class President was particularly popular, having 4 candidates: Delaney Williams, Aram Babagian, Anyah Tillman, and Michael DeCampos. All the candidates are well involved in clubs and sports, great participants of Ranger culture. There’s a lot to look forward to in the contest for Junior President.
“I think that sporting events other than Football should get a lot of attention…For one thing, I think that basketbal is a reallly fun sport and if we just had a little more spirit then a lot more people would go…” – Michael DeCampos ’21
Skylar Ford ’20 is the only Senior Class VP candidate and wasn’t able to attend the forum due to Swim’s WYL. Aubree Castillo ’20 is the only Senior Class President candidate and she stated that she wants the Senior Class to be as unified as possible, “I want to make sure that everyone’s voices are heard in order for everyone to have a great year next year.” Castillo is also a member of Dance Force and an Ag student.
The Rally Commissioner position is in sight for Christine Santos ’20. She’s been an active member in ASB and dance. Santos said that she loves rallies and setting them up so she wants to inherit the job Leslie Arellano ’19 has had for the year and make it better for everybody.
Lauren Kneeland ’21 and Donna Oregel ’20 are competing for Inter-Club Counsel Commissioner. Oregel has ideas to increase participation in Homecoming and use Canva and Social Media to help the communication process. Kneeland desrcibed her vision of having two club days so more people interact with clubs and therefore increase participation.
The ASB Secretary position is ultimately Kylea Moshier’s ’20. Moshier described her job as secretary as “writing down all the awesome ideas that ASB has, making sure that everything can stay organized, so that the ideas we have can really be put into practice on campus.” Moshier is a part of the Volleyball team and Track team as well as being President of a club called Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Interact Club.
Edgar Juarietta ’21 is running for ASB Secretary. Juarietta’s approached the idea of interacting with the newer restaurants and stores around us for new fundraising opportunities as well as keeping the the ones we already have such as Jamba Juice. When asked how he’s going to make sure our budget is being spent effectively, he answered that the money going to too much of one thing should go to something else.
ASB Vice President is in the bag for Josh Gilcrest ’20. Gilcrest describes himself as creative, driven, and full of crazy ideas and energy. He’s also a part of Mocktrial and FBLA. Gilcrest stated that his position is very similar to the President but he wants to improve the classroom environment in ASB and make sure everybody’s “hands on deck, all the time, constantly just making things better..”
“I know where to draw the line between goofing off and getting things done. If I’m just sitting still, personally, I cannot be, I have to be going out and doing something.” – Josh Gilcrest ’20
The ASB President candidates are three people: Savannah Travis ’20, Jimmy Thongseng ’20, and Jada Griffith ’20. Travis had spoke about a marquee she’d want in the quad that posts of school events such as sports, musicals, and club events. She also has the idea of painting the trash cans. Thongseng said he enjoys giving “good vibes” and meeting new people. Griffith comes up with ideas that are “out of the box, above and beyond.” Griffith had the idea to climb the water tower and hang a “Vote for Jada” sign across it but wasn’t able to under Mr. Lor’s disaproval. The ASB President candidates are all friends and work together to make the school a better place with or without the title as “President.”
To learn more about the candidates and their ideas, you can watch the ASB Forum on the RangerTV YouTube channel. Make sure to Vote this Friday! We can’t wait to see who’ll be leaders of Redwood Highschool for 2020!
